The International Museum Day is celebrated worldwide each year on or around 18 May. The traditional role of museums is to collect objects and materials of cultural, religious and historical importance, preserve them, research into them and present them to the public for the purpose of education and enjoyment.
The International Museum Day represents a unique moment for the international museum community. It is a day for high appreciation of the role you play in the life of society, collecting, preserving and popularizing the spiritual and material riches of our history. Your professionalism, sensitive and deep approach allow you to learn and implement new organizational, communication and information technologies.
Museums are so essential for cultural preservation. They play a crucial role in preserving local culture. With careful documentation and artifact preservation, a culture can be recorded and remembered regardless of its future. Museums contribute to the development of territories, make them attractive for both residents and guests of the Vologda Region. State support of museums, strengthening and expansion of professional contacts of museum workers, consolidation of the museum community are priorities for successful development of the region’s museum sphere.
The variety of museums in the Vologda Oblast caters for people with a wide range of interests. Visitors tour the oblast's many museums, which together house a large collection of items from Russia's past. Numerous architectural monuments reflect the history of the region, most of them were turned into museums.
