Over 4300 events covering different genres and styles of music, literature, crafts and theatre were held within the framework of the "Summer of the Russian North" project.

A large-scale project "Summer of the Russian North" finished in the Vologda Region. It was launched on the initiative of Acting Governor Georgy Filimonov.
Numerous events took place on the territory of the Vologda Region: cultural and sports festivals, forums, fairs,and other holiday events. Vologda's residents and guests of the Vologda Region actively participated in them. Over 1.3 million Vologda's residents became participants of the project.
This summer Vologda hosted several inter-regional and international events - International Drama Festival Voices of History, International Folk Crafts Festival “City of Crafts”, VOICES Festival (VOlogda Independent Cinema from European Screens), Russian Folklore Festival "The Village - the Soul of Russia", to name but a few.
Alongside with these international events, the so called Summer of Russian North project included several inter-regional festivals covering different genres and styles of music, theatre, literature and crafts.
Vologda became home to XVI International Drama Festival Voices of History from June 19 to 27. In 2003 it received an international status. The performances are shown not only in the theater buildings, but also in the open air, in the historical setting of the Vologda Kremlin, which is a point of interest itself.
An International Festival “City of Crafts” was held in Vologda on June 27-30. The festival is aimed at popularization of folk arts and handicrafts among the younger generation. According to the organizers, every day of the festival was devoted to various programs that reveal to the audience the secrets of one of the folk crafts in the heart of Vologda - Kremlin Square. Artisans showed off their virtuosity in several categories - traditional female crafts, wooden and birch bark craft painting, valenki (kind of felt boots), wood engraving and wicker-work, blacksmithing, potter's craft and forgotten handicrafts.
VOICES Festival (VOlogda Independent Cinema from European Screens) took place on July 3-7 in the Vologda Region. Since 2010 VOICES has become an essential event for all European and Russian independent cinema lovers. Hundreds of guests and films, dozens of concerts and workshops were welcomed by Vologda all along these years.
The basis of the Festival is the most interesting novelties of cinema and interesting guests. As always the organizers are preparing different workshops, interesting exhibitions and the traditional Picnic.
Ustyuzhna hosted a Blacksmith Festival on August 9-10. The festival was a meeting place for professionals as well as the general public where people of all ages and all walks of life have a good time. Every year blacksmiths from all over Russia come to Ustyuzhna to promote the craft of blacksmithy, demonstrate their skills and choose the best master.
Historical reconstruction, music and ethnic fashion "Heaven of the Slavs" was held in Kirillov District on August 10-11. On this occasion, the Kirillov Municipality prepared a special program - folk music concerts, performances, master classes, an archery tournament, games and historical reconstruction dedicated to the events of the Great Trade Route. The organisers arranged ethnic fashion shows, performances and special activities with children. Local residents, guests and tourists had a wonderful opportunity to plunge into the interesting historical epoch.
The Folklore Festival "The Village - the Soul of Russia" was held in Vologda District on August 17-18. The festival has been officially organized in the Vologda Region since 2014. 38 ensembles and 45 masters took part in IX All-Russian Folklore Festival this year.
The creative project is aimed at preserving cultural identity, creating conditions for the development of traditional folk culture and promoting the cultural and historical heritage of the Vologda Region and various regions of Russia. The main idea is to bring together the groups and ensembles from around Russia in the Vologda Region in order to further the cross-enrichment of cultures and promote cultural cooperation.
