Veliky Ustyug takes the second place among small towns of Russia for trips during Maslenitsa (a pancake week).

Shrovetide (a pancake week) will be celebrated in Veliky Ustyug with pancakes, fun songs, games, sledging, and other entertainment activities from Monday February 12th to Sunday February 18th.

The study conducted by e-service for searching hotels Tvil.ru compiled its results based on the number of hotel reservations.

The top ten of the rating most popular for traveling during Pancake week includes such Russian cities as Suzdal, Veliky Ustyug, Pereslavl-Zalessky, Ruza, Ostashkov, Lakhdenpokhonya, Pechory, Borovsk, Goryachy Klyuch and Sudak.

Maslenitsa is an old Russian pagan tradition that was adapted by the church. This week-long festival, which celebrates the sun and the end of winter, is now also used to mark the week before the beginning of Great Lent. During the seven days of the festival, people eat pancakes (its round shape represents the sun), participate in games and activities. On the last day of the festival, on Sunday, people ask forgiveness of one another and burn a large straw doll that is called Maslenitsa.
