Crowds gathered in Totma (Vologda Region, Russia) on February 1 to celebrate the ceremonial start of the World Cup Sled Dog race “Russian North”.
The World Cup Race event “Russian North” was held on January 31-February 2. Almost one hundred athletes from 22 Russian regions, Estonia, the Czech Republic and the Republic of Belarus and over 500 dogs took part in the event, a great test of strength and a great winter festival.
Teams of dogs led by drivers known as mushers dashed across gentle slopes, flat plateaus and forest-clad valleys, which allowed the dogs to get up plenty of speed. Mushers raced with a team of one or two or up to 16 dogs, a mix of breeds known collectively as Alaskan Huskies. The Alaska husky is a dog with very special characteristics; there is no other dog in the world capable of transporting people quickly over long distances.
