The visit to Tot’ma District, the oblast's third biggest district in terms of total area, was arranged as part of a series of visits throughout the Vologda Oblast examining economic and social development of regions. Mr. Kuvshinnikov got acquainted with the industrial and agricultural enterprises of the municipality.
The program of the visit is extensive. To begin with, Oleg Kuvshinnikov opened a new sawmill in the District of Tot’ma.
The focus of the new sawmill is protection and reproduction of forests. The company is engaged in growing planting material for reforestation, wood harvesting and production of lumber. It plans to increase production capacities and expand the assortment of wood products.
"Opening of new production facilities is a contribution to the future, creating jobs, attracting additional investment and expanding market opportunities. Today, the Vologda Region is one of the leading timber processing regions in Russia. About 75% of the wood is processed in the region," noted Governor Oleg Kuvshinnikov.
On a visit to Tot'ma the Governor visited a farm that was built not long ago. The new enterprise can boast modern equipment. Like other farms of the Vologda Oblast, a new farm in Tot’ma uses automatic milking systems, also called voluntary milking . For the first time ever in Russia a milking robot was installed on a dairy farm in the Vologda Oblast in 2007. Automatic milking is a serious alternative for a traditional milking parlour. A successful use of automatic milking depends largely on the farm conditions and the management skills of farmers. There is a tendency to increase the number of farms milking with an automatic milking system throughout the Oblast. In terms of milk production, the Vologda Region ranks 2nd in the northwestern Federal district and 13th in Russia.
