This weekend, Totma, located in the eastern part of the Vologda Oblast will mark its 885-year anniversary and celebrate a traditional Day of Russian Columbus.
The town once prided itself on the seafaring merchants who traded in Siberia and America. It was a native of Totma, Ivan Kuskov, who founded Fort Ross in California, USA.
In 1808 Totma native Ivan Kuskov led a voyage to the shores of western America. After several expeditions, Kuskov founded Fort Ross, and the colony organized a school for Russian and Native American families. He married a local woman who converted to Orthodoxy and returned with her to Totma in 1823. In 1990, the house where Kuskov spent the last months of his life became a branch of the Totma Museum Complex; it features documents and items related to the exploration of California.
During three days, the town’s open spaces will host concerts, festivals, feasts, and adventure games - get ready to join in!
