The Olympic torch arrived in Vologda on October 20th from Yaroslavl. The ceremonial relaying of the Olympic Flame from Olympia, Greece, to the site of an Olympic Games began on October 7th. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin kicked off the Sochi 2014 Olympic torch relay. It will take 123 days to trek across the country in time for the Olympics opening ceremony.
The relay will travel some 65,000 kilometers throughout all 83 Russian regions. Vologda is among 129 Russia’s cities that have the honour to take part in the Olympic torch relay.
The selected torchbearers include 130 representatives from the Vologda Oblast. Sochi 2014 torchbearers include athletes, public figures, teachers, doctors, rescue workers, military personnel, coaches, war and labour heroes, students, pensioners and many others. Successful candidates were selected, among other things, for their commitment to a healthy lifestyle, sport and the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect.
Those who will have the honour of carrying the Olympic flame during the torch relay include Ded Moroz, Russia’s equivalent of Santa Claus who lives in Veliky Ustyug (Vologda Oblast). Russia's chief magician was appointed "Ded Moroz of Sochi 2014" by Sochi CEO Dmitry Chernyshenko in December 2009. And Ded Moroz is to take part in Olympic events and Paralympic Games in February-March 2014. His residence will emerge in the Sochi Olympic Park.
The Olympic torch relay traversed all architectural and cultural monuments of Vologda and wound up with a lightening of the Cauldron of the Flame. The ceremonies dedicated to the arrival of the Olympic flame in Vologda were held at the Kremlin square in the historic part of the city.
The torch relay kept well to the time-table. In the dusk of evening the flame arrived at Revolution Square where the Governor went up onto the stage and proudly lit the Cauldron of the Flame. Then the relay will travel to Petrozavodsk, the Republic of Karelia.
