Sweet condensed milk (sgushchenka) is very popular in Russia. This gooey, sweet treat was a Soviet staple. Condensed milk is cow's milk from which water has been removed. It is used in cooking, for making creams for cakes and pastries.
The production of sweet condensed milk started in the Vologda Region in 1933 in the city of Sokol. The Sukhonsky dairy plant in Sokol is the only enterprise in the region that produces canned milk. The company produces sweet condensed milk also for military needs since canned milk can be stored for a year in any condition and could quickly hydrate a person. Canned milk is kept in Russia’s state food reserve.
Significant investments have been made into construction of modern production facilities and packaging equipment at the Sukhonsky dairy plant. In 2020 alone, about 8 million cans of condensed milk were produced, which is a 5% increase as compared to the last year.
“The products of the Sukhonsky dairy plant are in high demand and are sold all over the country under the trademark "Vologda made product", which is a sign for clients and consumers that our goods and services focus on quality and are run with efficiency”, said Vologda Region Governor Oleg Kuvshinnikov during his visit to Sokol.
The company expands its delivery services exporting products to the countries of the Asia-Pacific region, as well as to dozens of Russian regions, including Siberia and the Far East.
