18th International exhibition-fair "Russian Wood" has started its work in Vologda today. The Vologda Oblast is a vast wooded area with some 70% of its total land covered with forests. Wood is the most precious treasure of the region, noted Vologda Oblast Governor Oleg Kuvshinnikov. That is why the development of timber industry is indicated as a priority in the Vologda Region.
Russian Wood, an exhibition for innovation technologies to be applied in the timber industry, in production of technological equipment for forestry and manufacture of wood and wood-working articles gives an opportunity to be engaged in discussions with other professionals.
For the previous years the exhibition has rightfully become one of traditional meeting for representatives of timber industry business, science, regional government bodies as well as Russian and foreign investors.
Participation in the exhibition-fair gives the opportunities for entering the market, establishing new business contacts and promotion of company's brand among Russian customers.
The scope of the exhibition-fair is impressive. This year over 170 exhibitors from Russian regions and foreign countries applied to participate in the Russian Wood. Among official foreign delegations there are guests from Poland, Belarus and the Chinese People’s Republic.
The organizers announced several conferences and out seminars on a variety of issues relating to urgent problems of timber complex development, forest management, reforestation, timbered house-building, innovations, forest ownership, to mention but a few. It will also be the setting for a number of scientific seminars and award ceremonies.
Today's programme includes a panel discussion on timber sector development in the aspect of Russian Federation state policy concerning forests utilization, protection and reproduction. Among the participants of the event there are Vologda’s Governor Oleg Kuvshinnikov, deputy head of the Federal Forestry Agency of the Russian Federation Alexander Panfilov, assistant to Plenipotentiary representative of the RF President in Russia’s North-West Sergei Zimin, deputy of the State Duma Oleg Lebedev, and head of the Non-Profit Partnership “Forest Union” Victor Grachyov.
Alexander Panfilov remembered the main guidelines for timber industry development that were in the highlight of the State Council Presidium meeting on strengthening the timber sector of the Russian Federation. The issues discussed include different aspects of state policy on the use, protection and rehabilitation of forests, the development of the timber industry and forest management.
The experts agreed that they must also promote the investment attractiveness of the timber complex. Implementation of large-scale investment projects will boost the development of timber sector.
During the panel discussion Vologda’s Governor Mr. Kuvshinnikov briefed on an agreement between the Vologda Oblast and Sveza Group, a global leader in production of birch plywood that will implement an investment project in Vologda. The cooperation aims to construct a new sulfate pulp mill in Vologda, Northwest Russia. The total investment of this cooperation project under public private partnerships will make up over USD 2 bln. Private investments will amount to nearly 90 % of the total sum.
The new sulfate pulp mill will boost development of timber industry of Vologda territory and finalize formation of a forest industry cluster in the Vologda Oblast. Moreover, as the productivity of forest plantations increases, the opportunity for tailoring wood properties of select species for specific end uses that add more value to the forest supply chain will become more feasible.
The planned capacity of the sulfate pulp mill will be over a million ton of bleached of wood pulp per year.
After the panel discussion Vologda Oblast Governor welcomed participants and guests of the exhibition and took part in the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
