Direct Speech

Dear residents of Vologda Region! My congratulations on the World Aviation and Cosmonautics Day!

06.04.2020

On April 12 the whole world celebrates an Aviation and Cosmonautics Day - a date when for the first time ever mankind went beyond the limits of the home planet and entered a new space age.

On April 12, 1961 Yuri Gagarin, a citizen of our country, orbited the Erath onboard “Vostok” spacecraft for the first time in mankind history, thus opening the era of manned space missions. The first spaceflight lasted 108 minutes.

Vologda’s residents also made a tangible contribution to aerospace industry development. Our region is proud of Pavel Belyayev, a Vologda-born cosmonaut who flew on the historic Voskhod-2 mission, the Soviet spacecraft that was orbiting the planet on March 18-19, 1965. The spacecraft's crew comprised Alexei Leonov and Pavel Belyaev. Belyayev directed Leonov's first-ever space walk. Alexei Leonov spent 12 minutes and 9 seconds floating in space and was the one who climbed out of the spacecraft and into open space for the first time in history.

Nowadays it is a special date - a day of science triumph, a day of all the people involved in aerospace industry, a day of those who remember the history of conquering the near-Earth space, those proud for achievements of our cosmonautics.

I would like to express my congratulations on this date to all professionals and just fans of cosmonautics! Wishing you health, happiness, well-being, peace and new discoveries!
