Sports in Vologda Oblast

The Vologda Oblast have provided some fantastic champions: Sergei Fokichev (speed-skating), Nikolai Gulyaev (speed-skating), Anna Bogaliy-Titovets (biathlon), Albina Akhatova (biathlon), Anatoly Alyabyev (biathlon), Vera Kalashnikova (track and field athletics), Dmitry Yushkevich (ice-hockey) and many others. Yulia Chekalyova (cross- country skiing) and Ivan Skobrev (speed-skating) also made a tangible contribution into sports development, they are medalist of numerous prestigious international championships.

It has become prestigious for the residents of the Vologda Oblast to go in for sports and fitness. The region provides a wide range of sports facilities. They are spread throughout the area and include sports to suit every taste. People can choose from aerobics, basketball, weight lifting, tennis, to name a few. Swimming, cross-country skiing and skating are also very popular sporting activities, being almost equally undertaken by children and adults.

Vologda athletes have won the respect of the world for their skill. A sport training for the children begins in nursery schools and kindergartens and continues throughout school. There are also special sports camps and clubs for children and adults. About 700 athletes from the Vologda Oblast are members of the oblast’s teams, over 80 of them are included into the Russian national teams. In 2013 the training centers of the Vologda Oblast trained 52 masters of sports, 152 candidates master of sports, 246 athletes of 1st category and 16 referees of higher category.

Last year Vologda’s sportsmen took part in 302 Russian and 35 international championships. They won 183 gold medals, 146 silver ones and 154 bronze medals at the Russian competitions. While at the international championships Vologda’s athletes took 10 gold, 16 silver and 14 bronze medals.

The Vologda Oblast is represented by such professional teams as a hockey club Severstal (Continental Hockey League), a male basketball club Severstal (Super League), a female basketball team Vologda-Chevakata (Premier League), a male volley-ball team Politekhnik (major league B) and a female volley-ball team Severstal (Super League).
