District of Kadui


The district of Kadui is located in a very picturesque place. The spot affords a breath-taking panorama of the soaring forests, the expanse of still undeveloped fields and green coppices. The district of Kadui is one of the ecologically-friendly areas in the Vologda Oblast. The network of waterways (the Suda, the Andoga, the Kolp') allows the tourists to take a kayak out into the river. The water itinerary along the Suda is included into the 100 water itineraries of Russia. Numerous lakes, located in the district, are rich in fish and game. There are about 50 species of fish there. The forests occupy 85 percent of the district's territory. There are 2 wildlife reserves, which contain an abundance of wilderness, wildlife and spectacular beauty. Elks, wild boars, brown bears, lynxes, red foxes, martens, squirrels and hares can be found there. The reserves abound with more than 200 species of birds. You'll spot heath-cocks, wood-grouses, hazel-grouses, geese and wild ducks there.

Another point of interest historically is the Philipo - Irapsky monastery, situated in the settlement of Zelyony Bereg (Green Bank). It was founded in 1338 by Philip Irapsky. It is the oldest structure in the settlement to survive in its original form. Here you can step back in time to an era that exemplified grace and tranquility. A wooden church was raised in Kadui in 1999 for the money collected by ordinary people.

Take a short drive to the settlement of Khokhlovo where a centre for traditional local culture was established. The year 2001 saw the opening of the centre of handicrafts where local artisans demonstrate their skills and share their experience with the visitors. The museum of local lore was opened in 2000. It tells the story of the development of the region paying attention to people's way of life in the preceding centuries.
