Vologda Region is stepping up cooperation and foreign trade turnover with Finland.
Sannamaaria Vanamo, chief of the Finnish St. Petersburg Consulate General met with Vologda Region Governor Oleg Kuvshinnikov.
Governor Oleg Kuvshinnikov and Consul General of Finland in St. Petersburg Vanamo Sannamaaria discussed priority areas of cooperation within the framework of St. Petersburg International Economic Forum today.
“We are very interested in developing contacts, economic and humanitarian ties including the exchange of business missions. In 2019, the region's foreign trade turnover with Finland reached US $ 440 mln. Last year, the pandemic caused a decrease in foreign trade turnover by 17%, but according to the results of the first quarter of 2021, it is obvious that the Vologda Region and Finland are again increasing volumes," Oleg Kuvshinnikov said.
As for timber export, the region is aimed at 100% wood-processing on its territory. Enterprises produce large-format laminated plywood, CLT panels and prefabricated houses. A sawmill owned by a Finnish company has been successfully operating in the Sheksna District for several years. There are investment opportunities in this direction.
Agribusiness is one more sphere for cooperation between the Vologda Region and Finland. According to Oleg Kuvshinnikov, the region is developing fish farming to promote food security and fully provide residents with fish of its own production. In Finland, this industry is one of the priorities, so Vologda’s producers will be interested in sharing experiences and best practices of aquaculture technologies.
Another priority is tourism. The Vologda Region offers interesting tourist itineraries within the framework of the project "Silver Necklace of Russia". Governor Oleg Kuvshinnikov noted that Vologda’s residents like to visit Finland as Finns are kind, friendly and hospitable.
"I am very happy to meet you. I’ve just arrived in St. Petersburg and started working as Finnish Consulate General. We have good relations and we are looking forward to developing tourism again and being able to travel. We hope to continue our effective and successful cooperation in the future. Unfortunately, I haven't been to your region yet, but I buy Vologda dairy products regularly," said Sannamaaria Vanamo.
The Consul General noted that the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum has become a platform for meeting with representatives of Finnish enterprises that work in Russia’s North-West, develop the production of goods and invest in the economy. Ms. Sannamaaria Vanamo also identified tourism as one of the most priority sectors for cooperation and expressed interest in exchanging experience on environmental issues.
“We are good neighbours, and I will fully support the strengthening of ties and the development of joint projects. We are open for dialogue and cooperation, we are ready to accept your business missions in the Vologda Region to discuss guidelines for collaboration, " Oleg Kuvshinnikov said.
The Governor congratulated Ms. Sannamaaria Vanamo on her appointment and invited her to visit the Vologda Region.
