Segezha Group to build CLT-panel plant in Sokol, Vologda Region.
The decision to build CLT-panel plant in the Vologda Region based on the Sokol Timber Company was made during the meeting of Vologda Region Governor Oleg Kuvshinnikov with the top leadership of Sistema JSFC at St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in May 2018.
Today Mr. Kuvshinnikov held negotiations with the head of Segezha Group within the framework of the 23rd International fair and exhibition Russian Wood that kicked off in Vologda.
The Vologda Region is taking measures to stimulate construction of individual timbered housing. The region will establish the largest cluster of individual wooden house building in Russia. The first stage of the project envisages construction of CLT-panel plant.
Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is a wood panel product made from glueing layers of solid-sawn lumber together. CLT has many applications. It can be used in walls, roofs or ceilings. The thickness of the panels can easily be increased by adding more layers and the length of the panels can be increased by joining panels together.
CLT is eco-friendly since it is made out of wood and does not require the burning of fossil fuels during production. By thickness, they can vary from 6 to 40 cm, and along the length - up to 24 meters. In this case, the material has high fire-resistant characteristics, the coefficient of noise and thermal insulation.
Floors or walls made from CLT can be fully manufactured before reaching the job site, which decreases lead times and could potentially lower overall construction costs.
Being made out of multiple layers of wood, the thermal insulation of CLT can be high depending on the thickness of the panel.
Today Sokol Timber Company which produces glued constructions, glued beams and house kits is the leader of wooden house building in Russia. Segezha Group plans to expand capacities aiming, first of all, at export deliveries, as there is a ready market in Europe.
The total investment will make up RUR 1 billion 700 million. It is expected that cross-laminated timber production facility in the Vologda Region will be commissioned by 2020. As soon as the plant reaches its designed capacity, it will be able to produce more than 35.4 thousand cubic meters of CLT annually.
57 new working places will be created, and the woodworking industry of the Vologda Region will reach a fundamentally different technological level.
