Extra-curricular activities

Extracurricular activities, such as sports, drama, music, dance and various clubs are an important part of educational experience of many students.

Extracurricular activities offer benefits as well. For a child who is not gifted academically, the chance to excel in the arts or in sports, for example, can make a huge difference in self-esteem. Many extracurricular activities teach real-world skills, such as journalism, photography or debate which can lead to lifelong interests, even careers.

They also learn teamwork and leadership skills that may be even more important in the long run than some of the academic subjects they study.

Most secondary schools have extracurricular offerings. The number of schools dealing with the study of history, geography, literature, archaeology, social anthropology and handicrafts is constantly increasing. Schools of Vologda, Cherepovets, Vytegra, district of Sokol, Kadui, Kirillov and Babushkino emphasize the importance of local lore and country study. Research and scholarly activity take place in many kinds of institutions besides schools.

Moreover, thousands of schoolchildren of the Vologda Oblast attend ecological and biological clubs. Annually the Vologda State Teachers' Training University arranges research expeditions devoted to phytobiology, hydrobiology and geobotany. These events are organized jointly with the district environmental committees. Regional studies allows the students to become proficient in research activity and take part in regional and All-Russian scientific conferences and competitions. It has become customary for the Vologda Oblast to carry out a local lore contest known under the name "Peace through culture".
